He karakia mō te māra

This karakia was created by Kereopa Baker as a karakia for the māra, acknowledging Rongo-mā-Tāne, Papatūānuku and Tāne-mahuta and the important relationship between our people and the whenua.

It can be used when planting seeds, preparing or tending the māra, or beginning mahi connected to growing kai. The karakia calls upon the rain and sun to support the growth of the kākano, with the intention that the harvest will provide oranga mō te whānau, mō te iwi — nourishment and wellbeing for our whānau and iwi.

We acknowledge and honour Kereopa Baker for creating and sharing this karakia for our whānau to use, learn and carry forward.

Kia tipu, Kia Puāwai

E Rongo-mā-Tāne,

E Papatūānuku,

E Tāne-mahuta,

Whakarongo mai, whakarongo mai

Tau mai tō mauri ki ēnei kākano, ka whakatōhia ki te kōpū o papa,

Hei oranga mō te whānau, mō te iwi.

Homai te ua, homai te rā,

Kia tupu, kia puāwai, kia hua nui e!

Tīhei mauri ora!

Rongo-mā-Tāne,

Papatuānuku,

Tāne-Mahuta,

Listen to me,

Bestow your mauri upon these seeds that we are planting in the whenua.

To sustain our whānau and our Iwi.

We call upon the rain, we call upon the sun,

To grow, bloom and bring a bountiful harvest

Let there be life.
